About P.U.P.S.
From Columbia to Greenville to Rock Hill to Charleston to Aiken, if you are planning to dig in South Carolina, Palmetto Utility Protection Service (P.U.P.S.) is your first stop for safety and damage prevention of underground utilities. P.U.P.S. is more than South Carolina’s centralized one call center that notifies member underground facility owners of a planned dig. P.U.P.S. is a state-wide family committed to the safety of our community and damage prevention to underground facilities for South Carolina.
Formed and funded by statewide member utility companies as a result of the 1978 Underground Utility Damage Prevention Act, P.U.P.S., a non-profit company, has been working hard for damage prevention and safety for more than 30 years. P.U.P.S. currently has a 21-seat board of directors representing member utility companies from across South Carolina. P.U.P.S. has a full staff of 34 qualified employees including the Executive Director, Patsy Sharpe.
P.U.P.S. mission statement is to communicate a statewide damage prevention program that is both educational and informative and enhances maximum protection for buried facilities along with a safe working environment for the excavators and the public.
Through trained customer service representatives and a statewide GIS mapping system, P.U.P.S. is working hard for the protection of underground utilities and the safety of the public.
Anyone proposing to excavate, dig, bore, tunnel, blast, or disturb the earth in any manner in which buried utilities may be damaged is required to call P.U.P.S. at 811 or (888) 721-7877) between the hours of 7:30 am (EST) and 5:30 pm (EST), Monday through Friday, 72 hours before starting the proposed work.
